The 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival begins today! On the opening day, 32 films will be screened in cinemas across Tallinn and Tartu.
At 19:00 the curtain will rise at Alexela Concert Hall for the anniversary show Round and Round, which will look back at the festival's three decades.
The evening will also see the presentation of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Bruno O’Ya scholarship.
The black carpet will be rolled out at 17:45, and the ceremony will also be available to watch via live stream.
The opening ceremony will be followed by the opening film of the festival, Ulya – an emotionally stirring drama by Latvian director Viesturs Kairišs, inspired by the extraordinary life of the world’s tallest female basketball player, the legendary Uljana Semjonova, who finds refuge on a basketball court. For local audiences, the film takes on a special resonance thanks to the soundtrack music of the folk music duo called Puuluup. Estonia has also contributed to the film’s production, and Latvia has submitted it as its Oscar nominee for this year.
Meanwhile, Apollo Kino Plaza offers the chance to take a remarkable journey through time. Aki Kaurismäki’s Drifting Clouds opened the very first PÖFF in 1997 and now returns to the big screen to mark the festival’s anniversary.
