Shorts National Competition 5

Festival
PÖFF Shorts 2026

This year’s National Competition runs a gamut of filmmakers, from some who are fresh out of high school to lauded veterans of the Estonian cultural landscape. This diversity of experience is reflected in the films themselves. There are some tinged with nostalgia, a celebration of times gone past and lives well lived. Others explore the here and now, with documentaries and fiction films touching upon the themes that affect us all in the modern day. And there are even some that look at what the future may have to offer.
The Estonian animation films in the programme continue the always subversive and quirky Estonian tradition we have come to celebrate, but they also move onto more experimental roads and hybrid choices. Bridging family and relationship themes with history and philosophy, they offer an always alert, visually and aurally engaging animated narrative.
The entirety of the selection solidifies the bold vision of not only filmmakers born in Estonia but those who choose to work and live here and celebrate the fact that there is so much diversity even amongst a small population.

A man goes missing from a district, where solitary Irene lives and an investigator contacts her for routine inquiry. She agrees to meet him, but the initially polite detective becomes increasingly obtrusive, when it is revealed that Irene was the last person to see the missing man. During a seemingly endless and surreal night, Irene is forced to face what was done to her in the past and what she herself committed.

Sleep refuses to come, and thoughts drift — admirable, questionable, frightening, and beautiful. One thought lingers: if Earth is just a marble in infinite space, what does any single life upon it mean? A gentle film that discovers quiet answers to the universe's biggest questions.

The film unfolds through the observing eyes of a karakat driver carrying fishermen across the frozen surface of Lake Peipsi. Each morning follows the same quiet cycle – entering the ice, crossing it, returning. The driver exists within this repetition, guided by the route and the steady engine hum beneath him.
As the journey advances, the fishermen, having started on a playful note, experience a shift. Once on ice, something changes: sound thins, distances open and the landscape turns transcendental. Lightness fades into focus as the crossing draws its passengers inward. A different silence settles.
The driver turns back alone. The hum resumes, unchanged. What has passed lingers only briefly before it repeats – the surface opening once more, the passage ready to begin again.

The animated film re-examines the Expulsion from Paradise from a first-person perspective. It portrays anxiety triggered by the collapse of an idyll, leading the Neurotic to confront self-rejection before finding a new form for an unwanted gift. Eastern tradition's interpretation of the expulsion as a gift, allowing humanity to experience the full spectrum of life, is a key theme.
