Sentenced at Birth
A young mother leaves prison with her daughter, only to discover that freedom may be the hardest sentence of all.
Behind the locked gates of Penitentiary No. 16, on the outskirts of Moldova’s capital, Chișinău, children play under the watch of prison guards as mothers serve the remainder of their sentences. With extraordinary access and trust, the film captures not only the harsh realities of life inside, but also the challenges that await after release. Following 23-year-old Ana and her 2-year-old daughter, Sanda, as they leave the prison, the film asks, what happens when the prison gates open, and the true test of freedom begins?
Filmed with remarkable observational intimacy, directors Diana Vlas and Daniela Miron stay close to Ana as she returns home, capturing moments of joy, family tension and heartbreak. Freedom brings no easy answers, and Ana must rebuild her life, find work and navigate relationships, all while trying to avoid the trappings of her past.
Made with immense warmth and compassion, “Sentenced at Birth” offers an unfiltered portrait of motherhood, womanhood and resilience, and a powerful look at generational trauma and the fierce struggle to give a child a different future. A rare and deeply intimate cinematic portrait of what it means to leave the past behind and begin again.
