Late Night Sci-Fi

Festival
PÖFF Shorts 2026

"Those of us of a certain age will remember when technology was slow to evolve but reassuringly familiar: our TVs may not have been flat screen but they lasted seemingly forever. Now technology moves in the blink of an eye. Every other day there’s a new phone model, an important new update or a shiny new gadget that promises to make our lives easier.
The films in this year’s Late Night Sci-Fi programme shows us the consequences of what happens when technology outpaces humanity. Often the worlds they present seem familiar yet also strange and alien with our society ’20 minutes into the future’. They deal with prescient concerns – the rise of AI and how people worry about their own obsolescence – but these films also celebrate the adaptability of humanity and how we abide – and even thrive – when things seem to be moving by at a million light years a second.

After yet another billionaire’s trip to space, after Winter Olympics held in the middle of a desert, we were sure of one thing: we were all going to die. Human stupidity had reached its peak: bananas wrapped in plastic, homosexual dogs shot dead. Loss of purchasing power. Climate change. Revolution. War. And after that… we’ll take pictures.

In a world where no one sleeps anymore, but where people plug themselves in like dying phones - Daniel short-circuits after a workplace accident. From that moment on, every second counts: he must recharge before he’s cast aside as social waste.
Blending fiction and dance, this short is a retro-futuristic ballet that flips a middle finger to modernity.

A little girl plays with her toys, blissfully unaware that she may hold the future of humanity in her hands. Meanwhile, fragmented voices of scientists and thinkers drift through the film like wandering thoughts—sometimes insightful, sometimes absurd. Shifting between the child’s innocent perspective and the chaotic uncertainties of artificial intelligence, this short is a whimsical yet cautionary tale about humanity’s latest shiny new toy.

Josefa Centeno, an 86-year-old woman, refuses to be uploaded to a digital afterlife, facing the consequences of defying the authoritarian regime. Built around archival footage, the director reimagines his grandmother’s life as a sci-fi fable about love, resistance and what it means to choose your own ending.
