A new documentary about Jüri Järvet, Estonia’s most internationally successful and best-known actor.

Jüri Järvet didn’t believe in talent. When praised, he would reply that if people knew how hard he worked, they would stop calling it talent.

He went to drama school because of a girl. He could never learn his lines sitting down. He went to the screen test for Grigori Kozintsev’s “King Lear” almost as a joke. Lear, and later Snaut in Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Solaris”, made him one of the most internationally recognised Estonian actors.

Yet he opened the sports pages before the arts section, made a mean stew, and turned up late to performances because of a game of chess.

Thirty years after his death, Järvet speaks again. Drawn from unseen home movies, letters, interviews and memoirs, his own voice returns through AI. Jüri Järvet’s story is told by Järvet himself. Set to music by Roman Vjazemski, this dreamlike portrait captures a man who was at once a workhorse, lit up every room and never stopped doubting himself.

“What matters is not so much what a character says, but what he leaves unsaid.”
