Opening Ceremony

Black Nights Film Festival’s formal opening ceremony takes place on Friday the 7th of November at 7 pm at Alexela Concert Hall. This year, in addition to the fancy photo shoot, ceremony and opening film, several special surprises await the guests. The program is longer and more exciting. Come and celebrate the start of one of the most important cultural events of the year!

What happens when the space is one, but there is a whole sea of languages – every drop speaks of its own as it falls, rains, evaporates.

Each language uses its own means, finds beauty in its own way, and remains at times elusive to other languages.
Body language, the language of music, mother tongue…

Yes, language can grant freedom, but it can also restrain.

But what if we were to bring together a bunch of different languages on one stage and let them act according to their own rules? Sometimes it happens that in the harmony of different languages something entirely new comes to life – something greater than the sum of those languages. When the feared cacophony instead becomes a symphony, where every language has its place and every identity contributes its own charged note, its own depth, its own story.

The opening ceremony of the 29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival will be hosted by Laura Võigemast and Ingmar Jõela.

For the first time in Estonia, the popular Catalan artist Maria Arnal will perform. In her work, she combines folk, pop, and electronic music. She is one of the most distinctive voices of Spain’s new music scene, drawing inspiration also from the polyphonic folk traditions of the Iberian Peninsula.

Her performance will also launch this year’s festival focus program dedicated to Catalonia, which over the course of two and a half weeks, will present a representative selection of both contemporary and classic Catalan cinema.

The festival’s opening film also comes from Catalonia, though its title remains a secret for now.

During the ceremony, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award and the Bruno O’Ya Young Actor’s Scholarship will be presented.

The doors of the concert hall and the black carpet with a photo wall will be open to guests from 18:00. We kindly ask guests to arrive in good time.

Dress code: black tie.

Latecomers will not be admitted to the hall! Thank you for your understanding!
